American Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to Four Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking military official, the US military executed a lethal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Strikes
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to increase the military buildup.
Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The government has faced growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
