RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
