Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
