The Siblings from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in MMA and at Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he reflects on how his clan's life has changed since moving to England from Dagestan in 2017.

"I love it here," the PFL star states.

"We frequently say, 'this was the country I ought to have been born in.'"

The 21-year-old left his home in the Caucasus region of Russia as his father believed a relocation spanning more than 3,000 miles offered better professional opportunities for him and his brothers.

The initial idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish their education before enrolling in one of the nation's colleges.

However, life now looks slightly different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a pro MMA athlete and is seen as one of the leading prospects in the PFL, a prominent MMA league.

His brothers have chosen a separate path in sport and have each been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir aiming for a position in the senior squad.

"Our key goal for us is to extract everything from our sports," explains Ibragim.

"I desire them to represent all of the best teams in the world. Today it is Man United, in the future it might be a another team."

From Wrestlers to Soccer Prodigies

Located in southern Russia, Dagestan has a mythical reputation among combat sports fans for generating a slew of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The area has a long history in wrestling, thriving in the sambo discipline and creating numerous Olympic and world champions.

This success is not a coincidence, though, as youth from the region are often pushed to begin fighting, specifically wrestling, almost as soon as they can stand.

"When I was young, my dad was constantly telling me and my little brothers that we had to be strong, first to defend ourselves, your family, and your companions," says Ibragim.

"So we all became accustomed to combat, and which is why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it assisted my younger brothers a great deal."

"Many of the footballers he faces don't have the identical foundation he possesses. That's why he's solid, strong and really competitive – due to wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, trainers grouped him with boys five years older.

He was unfazed by the oversight and was perfectly comfortable holding his own against older players thanks to his background in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the same age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, together with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was short-lived, however, as just weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's ability and he transferred across the Pennines as a result.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir netted a spectacular free-kick," recalls Ibragim.

"One of their scouts watched him play and picked him immediately."

Half a dozen years after joining the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the youngest players in the club's history to practice with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Do you know what he told me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim says.

"Can he be a first-team player for Manchester United? 100%. They need to let all the youthful players get game time right now."

"I don't think they would play less effectively than the current first-team players. I think the young guys are more motivated than the present squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have likewise made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up everything faster than the others. He's a good defender. He's going to be like a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Dream' to Fight at Old Trafford

Ibragim has now moved to Manchester and spends most of his days perfecting his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he spent three weeks in his native region at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev prepare for a late-year UFC championship bout.

"I would never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were young."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Recently training with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim states he is desperate to win a world title of his own one day.

But that does not stop him from occasionally fantasizing of playing for United and stepping out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a fantasy realized."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was discussing with the PFL officials about it to see if they could make it happen. It would be huge."
