UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with An additional 11 Nations
The UK government has included 11 further destinations to its official advisory roster regarding the threats of methanol contamination from contaminated spirits.
The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.
Only recently, the government had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to several high-profile cases including the fatal demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to vision loss or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Methanol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance often utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.
But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.
Government Guidance for Tourists
Government minister the minister stated that all travellers should know the signs of methanol poisoning.
"While consuming alcohol overseas, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official warned.
